The Ministry of Education and Research in partnership with the University of Lomé and WASCAL family in Togo awarded a high rank doctorate degree to the Programmes’ mastermind, Mr. Wilfried KRAUS.

Indeed, the University of Lomé was honored to receive Mr. Wilfried Kraus, Responsible of the Programme at the Federal Ministry of Education in the Federal Republic of Germany, as the man behind the success of WASCAL – West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use.

This high rank doctorate degree titled “Honoris Causa of the University of Lomé” award ceremony was held on Thursday 8th February 2018 at the Auditorium of the University of Lomé.

This honorific university degree had been awarded to Mr. Wilfried Kraus due to his devotion to see the development of the West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use, WASCAL, and his advocacy and unwavering support since the Programme implementation in West Africa. As a climate change based teaching programme in the west african countries, WASCAL benefited support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research since its implementation in 2012 to date thanks to the devotion of him. Therefore, Mr. Kraus has the merit to be honored and elevated to the rank of Honoris Causa of the University of Lomé. It is in this regard, that the Togolese government authorities including the Minister of education and research, the Minister of environment and forest resources, and the Minister of agriculture had been informed of the event, as well as seven diplomatic missions present in the Togo and which belong to WASCAL member countries.

For the occasion, the President of the University of Lomé and his board members were present. It must be recorded that the University first Vice President conducted the event organization as he called on seniors lecturers, researchers, students representatives and members of the civil society to partake in the solemn ceremony. About fifty fellow lecturers have graced the memorable event as they wear their graduation colorful togas. Almost fifty students representatives attended. other fifty civil society members also took part. WASCAL Alumni in Togo were not left behind, they joined the yet to graduate pupils of the master research programme on climate change and human security came into their numbers to witness the event.

The President of the University of Lomé in his opening speech stated ” The choice of your person for the first Doctorate Honoris Causa that we deliver today in our University community illustrates these dimensions to the highest point. In honoring you today, we feel a great honor to receive you and welcome you to the University of Lomé. Mr Kraus, you have been able to mobilize resources, multiply partnerships and plead the support of the German Federal Government with which a significant budget is allocated for the activities of creation of WASCAL centers in West Africa.”

The Secretary General of the Ministry of environment, in his address on behalf of the education Minister, declared that ”
I would also like to express my gratitude to Mr. Kraus, the architect of the international partnership, through him the program was born in West Africa. I take this opportunity to renew to the Government authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany, all my gratitude for the special support and attention they give to this program, which we welcome today.

I would also like to welcome the presence here, on our side, of the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Togo.

Finally, I would like to thank all the officials and staff of the WASCAL Program in West Africa, both those of the Office of Coordination in Accra, those of the Competence Center based in Ouagadougou and those of the ten cities hosting the different components of the training program, and all those who, in various ways, contribute to it, for the excellent quality of the work done in the sub-region and particularly for its successful completion in Lomé.”
